Standalone Sunday || Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone

Standalone Sunday is a weekly feature created by Megan @ Bookslayer Reads which aims to show off standalone books that you love.

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off.

Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist.

Caroline introduces Sam to Poet's Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd . . . until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear.

Have you read this book? Do you want to? Or do you have any standalone recommendations for me? Let me know in the comments!

  2. I think this is one of those books I was soooo excited before but ended up forgetting. OCD is something I've never read about before so I should definitely take note of this book. Also, this feature looks nice. Maybe I should do it some time.

    1. Yeah I just happened to come across it one day and read it straight away. I have such a strong love for reading about mental illness in books (as you know). I'm not sure if it's an accurate portrayal because I don't have OCD but I really enjoyed reading it! And yes, it's a really easy feature to do because it doesn't take up too much time and it's just fun!

  3. I was going to read this for Bookentine, but I pretty much failed at the readathon. :( I was just SO busy that I only go to read one book. I did get roughly 40 or so pages in, and I really liked it. I'm thinking once I have more free time to pick it back up again and give it a chance!

    1. Aw no, read-a-thons are hard though! I don't normally do them because I don't have time but I was off university for assignment week so it ended up being timed pretty perfectly for me. I'm going to post my wrap up for it tomorrow! I hope you get around to reading it! I remember it being great!

    1. I know tell me about it! It didn't seem like the kind of book to have a twist in it but there it was...
